Challenge #1:  The Cholesterol Myth    updated Saturday, 28 April 2007

Take a look at the website:  http://nhlbisupport.com/chd1/how.htm

These “experts” say, what many “dieticians” and “nutritionists” claim:

·         Follow a low saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet.

·         Be more physically active.

·         Lose weight if you are overweight.

Question: Why should you follow a low saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet? What is the evidence, apart from “expert” telling us to follow these diets?
Some say if you don’t do this, you will die young. Some say if you do this, you will die young.

Responsibility?  So what do you think?  Now we have some serious problems:

Mechanism?  It seems that eating less cholesterol does not clearly reduce the level in the body.
The cholesterol you eat is animal. Do you think you have animal cholesterol in your blood? I am not sure. The body breaks down fat and cholesterol into chemical components in the stomach. Fat and cholesterol molecules do not pass directly into the blood stream. Your body makes these. Where is the mechanism for the passage of cholesterol directly into the blood? Is it magic? Does it happen?  Is 1 g of animal cholesterol converted to 1g of human cholesterol? We have around 6 litres of blood, not to mention all that tissue.

http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/Reviews.html is a good site to check out some of the mechanisms involved here.

4. What do THESE experts actually state as facts? NIH reference studies that show cholesterol-lowering medicines are the effective way to reduce blood cholesterol. They say nothing about any studies showing eating less cholesterol results in effective lower blood cholesterol. ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE MONEY CONENCTION. NIH facts: Cuts the salary for at least 18 627 people. (Accessed 28th April, 1007).  NIH states that not all the information provided is peer reviewed. Nor is it necessarily written by experts.

AND some “experts” do not agree that cholesterol reduction is needed to avoid heart disease.

What is the best way to think about these questions?

 Logic? Science?  Math? Mechanism? Risk?.
